Pleasantly surprised”
I was pleasantly surprised with the Ashley Hotel. Initially I had booked a room elsewhere but needed a room with 2 beds and this was the only “reasonably” priced option in the area I wanted to be. I didn’t have high hopes as the reviews are very mixed, but this turned out to be a good spot for us. Our room was on the top level, which I was nervous about as there is no lift, but the stairs were manageable for us. I could see it being more of an issue if you’re dragging heavy bags or have difficulty with stairs you’d want to contact the hotel directly and request a room on the lower level in advance (there will still be at least one flight regardless). The traditional Irish B&B style room and beds were comfortable enough for our short stay, clean, and the late night porter service was nice for our needs. All of the front desk were friendly and helpful. Bring your own toiletries - they only have handsoap in the rooms. Great location just a short walk to shopping on Merchants Quay, Sine and the Corner House for live music across the street, and 2 minutes walk from Paddywagon Tours for day trips. Cork train station about 10 minutes from the hotel. You leave your room key (a real key not card) at the desk when you go out and they give you a tag to trade when you come back - this is different but easy as there is always someone at the desk. If this had been about 50 euros less it would’ve been a better value for the accommodation, but all in all a decent place.

Nice, homely, old-style hotel close to city centre. Very clean. Helpful, friendly staff. We only stayed one brief night so we are not a good judge of the neighbourhood. Hot water was a bit on the cool side; may have been a problem there to be fixed. Very comfortable bed in a good sized room.

Stepping into the building you can tell it was built in the 1700’s. It has been updated since but the front desk is still behind the times. It is a throwback to pre-computer days. Handwritten registration, a real key, and key returns whenever you leave the hotel. Old fashion to say the least. They have a small car park; and have a deal with the public car park around the corner. The floors are slanted but that is part of its charm. The beds need to be updated but not too bad. Overall, it’s a bit pricey but we were comfortable. I would return.

Hotel is very run down and there is a very bad damp smell as soon as you enter through the front door. For the price they are charging for a one night stay I would recommend you pay an extra €20 , €30 for a better hotel. In the city.
Expensive - not value for money”
Upon entrance to hotel it looks quite grand with plush carpets but there is no lift to carry suitcase up narrow stairs. We booked on room only basis as breakfast seemed expensive also. The room had no view only to back of hotel with the bathroom looking like it was from 1970s!! The shower curtain was too close, so allowed for little room to move about in bath. Room was v hot, no air-conditioning . We had a 4 drinks at the bar, each costing €40+ per round!! Poor choice of beers and no gin! For £120 per night it was expensive. Better hotels for less available elsewhere.
