        beautiful view, lovely service”

the view outside our window, the convenience to transport and sightseeing, the friendly girl at the front desk

We were a couple, students from Australia, travelling on a bit of a budget but we decided to spend a few nights here at the start of our week in Tokyo so that we could stay in a traditional room. The girl at the front desk was super lovely, spoke english, and organised a last-minute breakfast for us for the morning after we arrived. On first entering the room we thought it was very sweet and traditional (tatami flooring, futons and paper screens) but then we opened the window and it was CRAZY - our room had a perfect view, overlooking the old-school shops on Nakamise street with the lit-up Tokyo Skytree in the distance. The girl at the desk gave us a card we could use to come in after-hours so when we first arrived we headed out sometime after 11pm and went to a ramen shop nearby and explored Donkihote. The next day we wandered around Nakamise street and checked out Sensoji, the shrine at the end of the street. The day after that we walked to Kappabashidori (the cookware/fake food district). I guess what I'm saying is that the location is just perfect, public transport is very easy to get to but you could just as easily spend a couple of days sightseeing within walking distance. Fair warning, do print out a map or have google maps on hand because the Japanese addressing system felt pretty counterintuitive and we did get a little lost finding the place. Asakusa is officially my favourite place in Tokyo and it's largely thanks to our stay at Ryokan Asakusa Mikawaya Honten. Take at least one night to buy cheap umeshu/sake/suntory highball from the convenience store, have a really hot bath, and sit in your yukatas watching terrible japanese game shows.

        Excellent stay!”

        Location, Staff, Experience

We were a group of three and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mikayawa Hanten Ryokan. The location is ideal for those who want to experience a different side of Tokyo. Although the rooms were small, they are clean and comfortable. Each room has its own wifi. Originally we booked a large room for 3 people but they gave us the option of having two smaller rooms. The ryokan is family run and the staff knows enough English to make communication possible. We had to see a doctor during our stay, and the staff found us a local doctor. Price wise, it is more expensive than other budget western style hotels near Shibuya or Shinjuku, but it is totally worth it if you want to have a unique Tokyo experience.

Great tradition style ryokan in a great location!”

Traditional ryokan rooms, clean, great location

This was my husbands and I first time to Japan and we wanted to stay at a traditional ryokan. Unfortunately we thought we could not afford to stay at one because the prices were higher than a western style hotel. We were happy to find this one located in a great location. (It is right around the corner from the Sensōji Temple in Asakusa.) This one had a separate bathroom (we were also looking for this) in the room and great wifi in the lobby. I would definitely stay here again.

Fantastic location near the Temples of Asakusa!”

Next to the markets, temples and rickshaw rides. also close to the trains if you know where you are going

my partner and i loved the japanese style of the rooms although small and the doors were short too - but a great way to soak in the culture. asakusa is the old part of tokyo and there were lots of lovely places to eat, a theme park and markets right on your doorstep - my favourite part of tokyo was in asakusa and the hotel was in a very central and convenient location. i would definately go back there if we return. there was one small problem with access whilst we were there - the staff were great in this situation and we were very happy with our stay.

        Excellent location, even better service”

        Location, location...

The location of this Ryokan is really great. Easy access to Asakusa Subway station and near to some major tourist attractions such as Sensō-ji temple and Ueno park. Hotel has a very good internet connection (free) at the lobby. Always also green tea served for the guests.  Only drawback was that the room was a bit wornout already (yet very clean). I had ensuite bathroom, which was convenient. My room was at the 4th floor, there was no noice from the street. The little street is so quiet though, so probably, even 2nd floor rooms are quiet enough.  All the staff at the reception extremely helpful and friendly. Thank you again! This was actually my general impression of Japanese people. Always so polite and friendly for foreigners! Tried to help always. The name of the Ryokan in English was only printed on a piece of paper on small letters outside of the place, so it would be challenging to find the place unless you know where it is exactly located. It's a good idea to bring a printed picture of the Ryokan on your hand when you arrive, so you'll be abto to recognize the building.

        A lovely Ryokan”

Traditional yet still convenient enough for your accommodation

It's been a great experience staying in a traditional ryokan, which placed in the middle of Asakusa, within the Sensoji Temple area. Very convenient to travel around, only 3 minutes walk to the Subway station. Good service, nice breakfast combo, and the atmostphere of the neighborhood really maximize every single Japanese moments at Asakusa. Internet is not available in each room can be a small limitation, however, in the lobby, wifi is quite strong.

Best place to propose to your girlfriend ever!”

Incredibly friendly staff, Insanely comfortable beds, and easy access to Japan's famous public transportation system

The service at this ryokan was absolutely stellar - I would stay here again, despite the traditionally small room size, in a heartbeat! This entire trip was to propose to my then girlfriend, and the staff was incredibly accommodating. They spoke both English and were willing to listen to me muddle through Japanese when necessary. They always asked in a friendly manner what our plans were for the day, and the cleaning staff knew us on a first name basis, never letting us leave without first greeting and talking with them :D The hotel staff ("ryokan-mother") even offered to help my fiancee put on a kimono properly, as we had planned on going out for the evening - it was a truly Japanese experience. Furthermore, the innkeeper was more than helpful in helping me to plan my proposal, even giving me special access to the ryokan just for the occasion. The inn may have been small and cheap, but for the degree of service, it was a 5 star!

        Lovely stay”

All aspects of this ryokan were very good. The Asakusa area is so inviting and historical. Ryokan Asakusa's rooms are small but tidy, bathrooms fully equipped and staff very sweet and friendly. A great choice for a Tokyo stay.

        Wonderful locations, pretty great rooms!”

        Location, staff, condition

I enjoyed staying here with two of my friends. The woman who checked us in was beyond gracious, and I enjoyed her presence the entire time we were at the ryokan. She was kindly able to answer our last minute emergency, places to eat and shop, and was able to look us places for me to attend a clinic when I had a painful ear infection. The rooms were well spaced for the country, though slightly uncomfortable. After adding a second futon pad I slept like a log. They were fun traditional style rooms, and had a lovely view. The bathroom was a better size than what I had experienced in some other ryokan stays. The location was very close to major points of interest, like the Gate and Shrines, as well as the subway and local market. The lobby also offered useful information. The ryokan also offered separately a traditional Japanese style breakfast meal which was just delicious. Overall, a wonderful experience.

        Super friendly and helpful staff”

        - located just right in main attractions - very helpful staff -comfortable bed

i suppose this hotel is one of the best hotels in Asakusa considering its location, price and the friendliness of all staff. The hotel is not that big but they always aim to help and staff speak good English. If i will go to Japan again, i'm definitely going to stay here. We really love the staff there actually they are owners since the hotel's a family run business. But one thing i'd like to add; they should have a bigger sign of the hotel's name in English because it's difficult to find the hotel when you have to walk around Asakusa area.

        Great place”

Love the location. Sensoji Temple is right next to the ryokan. The area has an old traditional vibe with tons of kissaten (old style Tokyo cafe) and sushi restaurants around. The room is basic but clean and comfortable for the price. Staff is friendly. There's also a washer/dryer which is always an added plus. Would come back here again!

Great stay in a traditional Japanese room”

Very friendly staff, Clean rooms and located just next to the Asakusa shopping street.

Stayed here a few days in a Japanese style room. The staff is very friendly and able to speak a bit of English. Wifi was available in my room. The hotel isn't big but the rooms are big enough. The bathroom is a bit small though. Most things are available at the room. The hotel itself was easy to find when you are at the Asakusa shopping street. It was on the 3rd road on the left when entering passing the gate in front of the shopping street. The entrance is recognizable from the photos on this site. Going out/in after 11 wasn't a problem. If you want to do that you'll have to get an access card for 1000 yen, which will be returned when you're checking out and giving the access card back. The hotel is located near a metro station. JR pass isn't valid on these, but for 160 yen you can take it to Ueno and take JR trains from there. It is also walkable (20 min).

        Excellent”

This ryokan was very convenient to Asakusa metro station. The room was basic and clean and had an en suite. There was free coffee and snacks available in the lobby and also a coin laundry. If you haven't been to Asakusa before I would recommend it as, apart from the temple complex river, and Sky Tree, there is a lot of restaurants and shopping right there. If you are looking for an early breakfast I recommend Koh Hi? on the main road walking away from the metro on the same side. It opens at 7:30am. You may have to wait but its good value.

Amazing Location. Great value for Price!”

The Location - close to the Tokyo subway and the Sensoji Shrine. Safe area - felt comfortable walking around in the evening. Great value for price!

I really enjoyed the Ryokan experience. Authentic Japanese style room with a full bathroom. A very clean room. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. Also the location could not be beat. Right in the heart of the Sensoji Shrine Shopping area and Tokyo Metro. The perfect Tokyo experience for me.

Great location, great service, and traditional experience”

The family that runs this Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) is so sweet. The rooms are beautiful with mat floors, 6 inch thick mattresses topped with comfortable bedding, good air conditioning, robes, slippers, and tea. You are also just 2 or 3 blocks from Senso-ji Temple, in a large shopping and food market area full of ramen shops, and about .5 km from the metro Ginza line that goes to central Tokyo and other areas.

        Enjoyable Stay”

After spending five nights in a modern hotel at the central but costly Ginza. It was time to see what a stay at a ryokan in a popular district would feel like. The Ryokan is strategically located a few minutes from asakusa station and literally seconds away from either kaminarimon or sensoji. the staff was very polite and spoke English. The Japanese style bed was surprisingly comfortable and it the area was quiet despite the ryokan being located a couple of meters from nakamise street. The only downside is that you have to check-out at 10 a.m. which can be a little inconvenient if you have a flight late at night. Overall. It was an pleasant experience

        Interesting... Very interesting.”

Close to subway, shopping street and temple.

It is tricky to find - While it is only about a 1 minute walk to the station the ryokan itself is located in one of the small street lanes akin to an alleyway. When you see the big asakusa temple, walk into the temple grounds. Keep to the left and you will see on your left there are rows of little streets akin to alleyways that are outside the temple grounds. One of these little streets is where the ryokan is located. If i'm not mistaken its either the third or fourth little lane. The ryokan is on the left. Location wise it is superb, next to the temple and among shopping streets. You can take a day just to explore Asakusa right outside the ryokan doors. Besides a tourist center there are convenience stores just around the corner and of course the subway. Note - You can take a direct train to Narita airport from Asakusa station. the train ride is about an hour and be careful, different trains go through that route so go to the station master, ask him which one is the one that leads all the way to Narita airport and what time/ which platform to take the train. The ticket costs 1,500 yen. Now, for the ryokan stay itself, it is a traditional Japanese type ryokan where you will be provided futons to sleep on. The rooms are facing the opposite street so the view isn't spectacular. Cleanliness was alright... there was some dusts on the things that were in the room but the futons and general area was clean as were the bathroom. We were provided a tea set, an alarm clock, TV , hair dryer and a lamp. The only plug points in the room was the one the TV was plugged into so i recommend you bring a extension board if you have more than one thing to charge at once. The staff who checked us in were always changing but they were friendly enough. FREE WIFI IN THE ROOMS. One last thing, there is a curfew at 11 but if you want to stay out after curfew hour you can get a key card from them that opens the doors for you. There is a deposit of 1000 yen for the card.

        Good job! ”

Great service etiquette, small and comfortable and location is convenient.

My stay at this ryokan was fulfilling, Yukata and tea bags were provided inside so that we can get to experience the Japanese culture which is interesting. The staff service was really good, they were very friendly when handling our queries. The location is pretty convenient as it is just a short distance away from the famous 'The Gate' at Asakusa.
