Home of the Great Wall
Huairou District,Beijing - View on map
"First it took some time to find the place. The Hotel is split into two parts: the expensive one up on the hill with great view on the great wall, which is also indicated as location on the website and which is also where the signs on the street will guide you. And there is the "low-price" one with the rooms I took. Low-price is 600 RMB per night - which is actually not too low in comparison what you could get in Beijing. At check-in the staff was very friendly, but no one spoke English. The rooms are made of brick-walls which gives a very cosy feeling. The bathroom is huge and nicely done. The rooms appear clean. Unfortunately the rooms are not very sound-proof. The first nights the neighbor rooms were not booked and I had a peaceful time. The last night I had people on both sides and I found the TV and entertaining-the-baby noises rather disturbing. But solid walls is something I have hardly experienced in China anyways - even in higher star hotels. Internet server WiFi has been indicated on my iPad, but I could not get any connection. Even 3G did not work for me so I have been cut-off the outside world. During my 4 Night stay the rooms have not been serviced once which is a little bit disappointing taking the price level. I do not necessarily expect that the linen are changed, but it would be nice to get another set of shower gel after 2 days. The hotel is not exactly walking distance to the great wall - it is about 3km up the hill walk. If you need an ok place to stay for the night - go for it. If you want a Great Wall experience it might be too remote. Be aware that the locks are a bit of a joke and the rooms do not have a safe deposit box. So be prepared to carry your valuables with you at all times. "

Sitting on the City Walls Courtyard House
Wangfujing Street & Forbidden City,Beijing - View on map
"My boyfriend and I (mid 20's) had a great time here. I did a ton of research in picking a place to stay in Beijing, and it certainly paid off. We were in one of the rooms off of the lobby, but we were there in November so there weren't too many other travelers for it to be loud like some other reviews report - we brought ear plugs just in case, but didn't need them. It was absolutely charming, safe, the staff were attentive. We had breakfast there on two mornings because we got up VERY early and it was so good! I had some sort of granola bowl and then a noodle bowl. One of my favorite things were the meals, snacks and drinks offered - they were so cheap! We hadn't booked our great wall trip prior to the visit because we couldn't find a reasonable trip for what we wanted. We booked our trip through the hostel and it was exactly what we wanted (and cheaper than alternatives!) - we didn't want the "touristiest" (Badaling) or the very difficult one - so we chose Mutianyu on the staff's recommendation. They were there to pick us up on time and we made some great friends. My aunt is from Beijing and my Aunt and Uncle travel there often, when I told them where I was staying, they said they heard really nice things. I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to stay in a name brand hotel, and i certainly don't need the top accommodations when abroad because i'm out exploring most of the time, so this was a great home base. OH! And it's located very close to a hot pot restaurant that was an amazing experience. The staff showed us how to use the bus system, which i'm so glad we did. It was incredibly cheap, close by, and convenient. The location of the hostel seemed so safe, I didn't feel uncomfortable walking around late at night in the dark. One down side was that it was a little tough to find at night, but be sure to print out directions and use a map. I would 100% recommend this hostel for anyone traveling to Beijing."

"This is by far one of the best hotel that I have stayed throughout my stay in China. Room was clean and decent. Beds was comfy and basic toiletries were provided. Staff was exceptionally hospitable and caring, went all out to ensure that we had a pleasant stay. Apart from the commendable service, hotel staff has good command in English so there wasn't any communication barrier. Hot tea was offered upon arrival.  The hotel is situated in the heart of Beijing and easy to locate. Directions to the hotel are clearly stated on the hotel website. 6 minuted walk to the nearest subway station and a mere 15 minutes walk to the famous Wangfujing shopping district. The set breakfast was decent. Guests are able to choose between western or oriental.  Overall, it was a pleasant stay at this hotel and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Beijing.  Keep up the good work guys! :)"

Templeside Deluxe Hutong House Hotel
Financial Street,Beijing - View on map
"owner/manager "bobby" has excellent english, much better than anyone at the large international hotel we stayed in later in nanjing. and he is very helpful and knowledgeable. can order in quickly delicious food to hotel. authentic hutong area experience, although location is hard to find, even for some taxi drivers, although it always worked out (be sure to have directions in chinese to give to taxi drivers). location is great for visiting nearby white pagoda temple (oldest and biggest buddhist temple in beijing), and walk to subway is fairly easy. local restaurants delicious. short taxi or easy subway to forbidden city/tiananmen square (long walk, hour +). easily arranged bus to great wall."

Duge Boutique Hotel
Back Lakes (Hou Hai),Beijing - View on map
"This is a beautiful, unique property. My husband and I spent two nights there on our first trip to Beijing. I can't imagine a better way to get acquainted with the hutong culture of the city. The rooms were gorgeous and unique, and the staff was super friendly. I've read other reviews that noted the language barrier and value for the money -- yes, we had a bit of a language barrier, but if you're looking for a five star western hotel I hear The W and the Intercontinental are lovely. But if you want a unique Beijing experience, Duge can't be beat! Highly recommend! "
