The Location can not be better. The Staff was great. The biggest Negative was no Elevator. But the staff helped me carry the heavy luggage up the stairs.
Wow this hotel is beautiful the more you climb the stairs, with the reception in the casual restaurant and next door to a beautiful formal fine dining restaurant. No elevator so stairs are great, huge rooms with lots of space and wood floors, common rooms are gorgeous, location is divine and breathtaking. What gem for staff and price! We might stay for a month!

“Don't be fooled by the photos”
I reserved Del Parque Hotel for a weekend for my first visit to Cuenca based on it's ideal location adjacent to Parque Calderon and the beautiful Spanish colonial building it is located in. When I arrived, I could not find the lobby or guest reception - because there is none. Instead, you check in at the waiter station in the back if the Del Parque Cafe located in the ground floor. Once I figured iut out that was where guests check in, I had to wait whike the lunch crew divided their tips on the small bar as there was nowhere else to go. Once I was checked in by a young lady who seemed to be the manager, she led me up four very long flights of steps to the rooms on the top floor, obviously there was no elevator. This was no problem for me but for older guests, those with young children or trouble walking this would be a major issue. Once we got to top floor where the hotel's rooms are located, I immediately noticed two things: this part of the hotel had not been updated in decades and the place seemed abandoned. You got the feeling no one had stayed there in a very long time. The young lady managed to open my room door with a very old skeleton key and once inside, I again felt like I had stepped back in time at least 80 years. You could see a long time ago the room had been amazing -it was huge with high ceilings and wood floors with tall shutterss leading out to a balcony. Like the rest of the floor; however, it had not been updated in many many decades with the lone exception of a small modern bathroom which was very clean. You could see the sag in the bed from across the room but the bedding aopeared fresh and clean. I figured I would make the best of it and thanked the manager. As soon as she left I went to the large wooden shutters to close the windows. During my stay Cuenca, the city was severely impacted by the power outages imposed across Ecuador. As a result, many businesses were relying in gas powered generatora to provide power. They are extremely loud and in Cuenca many businesses were positioning the generators on the front sidewalk directly outside their business. This chorus of obnoxiously loud generators drones on for hours at a time. Del Parque's generator was located directly below my room ane when I went to close my windowsnto reduce the noise, I discovered there were no windows - only the woiw shutters with slats that the noise could freely pass. It seemed that sleeping, even thinking would be impossible with the generator running. At that point, I was trying to decide what other options I may have as it was now about 530 pm on a Friday night so I attempted to get in the Internet and realized the manager had not said or given me any information about wifi in the hotel. So, I walked down the 4 flights of stairs to ask for the Wi-Fi information and as I reached the bottom floor I was startled to realize that the public entry from the main street into the hotel cafe was the very same entry to the stairs that led up to the hotel rooms. In other word, anyone could walk off the street right up the stairs to my room. No locked door, no secondary locked door, no doorman, no security, no nothing. Now, Cuenca does not have the crime of Guayaquil or even Quito but it has plenty of crime and tourists are warned not to walk the streets late at night. That was the last straw for me. I asked the manager for the Wi-Fi info and she scribbled down a password on a scrap of paper. I went back upnthe 4 flights of stairs and after numerous attempts, the password was never accepted. So, I grabbed my things, went back down to the cafe where the manager was now eating at a table in back and told her I was leaving. She announced that the 2 nights I had paid were not refundable. i was not going to discuss it with her at the time but I will be with my credit card company on the basis it was not a safe situation. It's too bad because the hotel has huge potential. Even though the building is not
