The staff at this hotel is very friendly and welcoming. Guests appreciate the in-room breakfast and dinner that feature local seasonal ingredients. The public bath with sulfur water and outdoor baths with a beautiful mountain view are popular amenities. The traditional Japanese-style rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, and come with comfortable Yukatas.

Few guests found the hotel slightly dated with rusty lockers. Some guests suggested improving cleanliness of the rooms and public bath. Overall, it's decent.

    “Tranquil stay ”

I booked this hotel for its location, food, onsen and price. Whilst others have complained about the ryokan being old but be prepare to pay more if you want something newer as price certainly don’t like. Our room was big and the hotel is just 5 mins walk from the station. The station have a ropeway to other place of interest except that it was closed for maintenance during our stay but there was a substitute bus that us to the next ropeway. We left our luggage with the hotel whilst we explored the area. When we came back they already put our luggage and bags into our room. They heated the room and it was nice and warm when we walked in. They bring dinner to our room and set up our bed. Went to the onsen and it was all lovely. Great portions of dinner and breakfast served! Our room came with some local sweets and green tea set ready for us to prepare and drink. Room is clean, staff polited and they speak English well. We checked out and left our luggages with them whilst w explored more of the city. We came back to collect our luggages and was surprised to be given ¥500 which they found in our room. My son has put down ¥500 upon entering the room and totally forgot about when we checked. Such honest customer service. I would not hesitate to stay with them again. Thoroughly recommended them. Room is exceptionally clean and big. It might be old but we’ve stayed in older mode dated hotel than this! For ¥27500 per night we were served 4 traditional meals for 2 person, what better value is this?

“Sisters on Thanksgiving Break visiting Hakone!”

This was the first ryokan that my sister and I stayed at in our Thanksgiving holiday trip to Japan, and Hakone Shirayunoyado Yamadaya Ryokan did not disappoint. We have to admit it was a journey’s away compared to the other ryokans and hotels in the area, but totally worth it. If I remember correctly, this ryokan was super close to the Hakone Ropeway (Sounzan Station?) which was terrific since we could get on early and be one of the earliest to enjoy the ropeway. A note for Hakone travelers, please don’t underestimate the transportation systems and distances in the area. What I mean by this is that while the buses are the most available transportation modes in the area, the ropeway, cablecar, and trains are also very integral transportations - especially if you are trying to get to this ryokan. The ryokan itself was very homey and pleasant. The staff was expecting us and checked us in almost immediately. I believe there were five floors in total and we were in the third floor - luckily next to the bath house. So an interesting note is that they actually change up the men and women’s bathhouses every day. For example, from morning to afternoon, the 3rd floor bath house would be for men and the 4th floor bathhouse would be for women. And then in the evening, they would change it up vice-versa. Don’t worry about getting confused though - you can recognize the gender by the curtains (red or blue). The onsen itself was simple but superb. They had one in the inside and two bathtubs outside - just like in their pictures. Our room was Japanese-style and had a wonderful view of the mountains. Very clean, warm (had a heater which was god-send since it was freezing where we were), and had simple amenities. I remember my sister being super excited about the bathroom as this was her first real experience with a private Japanese toilet. The staff were a delight and could speak sufficient English. They were very helpful and helped prepared dinner in our rooms and change out

“The best accommodation for value for money.. And the staff are incredibly friendly..”

First of all, the price is excellent... And the staff are extremely kind ㅠㅠ When I asked for both ice water and warm water, they brought it to me, which was very convenient! The hot springs are also really great... I truly felt like my skin was glowing like Lee Young-ae's... It's on the 3rd and 4th floors, and the male and female times change every hour. My mom and I preferred the 4th floor! It seems that there weren't that many guests staying, so we could mostly enjoy bathing with just our group... I highly recommend it! Also, Owakudani is close... I didn't feel it was very inconvenient to move around! The downside is... the Wi-Fi gets disconnected around 9:30 PM... I was told that it might disconnect if there are too many users, but it was disconnected at 9:30 both nights, so it seems likely to happen every day...! So it turned into a forced digital detox... and I actually liked it, so I went to bed around 10 o'clock. Haha, it was a proper healing trip...! And there are no convenience stores nearby! I recommend buying some food from a place with a convenience store, as mentioned in reviews! In conclusion, I definitely want to revisit!! Highly recommend!!

“I want to go again. I will write to prepare for my next visit.”

    1. The staff are kind. They serve breakfast and dinner directly in the room and also make the beds. They explain how to dip the food into each sauce, and after finishing the meal, they clear the table and offer desserts. I told the staff that I didn't mind them not coming back and forth too much for the bedding and cleaning, but they really wanted to help (very kind). 2. Breakfast and dinner are excellent. Everything was delicious. For dinner, I once had a one-person hot pot, sashimi, and in between there was sukiyaki. 3. The hot springs have alternating hours for women and men on the 3rd and 4th floors. There is a private bathroom on the 5th floor, but it is in the room. The water has a strong sulfur smell and is cloudy. Even with sensitive skin, I was fine, and right after the bath, it felt like I had applied lotion. The outdoor baths on the 3rd and 4th floors each have two private tubs, and the view from the 4th floor is better. When standing on the 3rd or 4th floor, the scenery is very appealing, and there's a fence around, so you can see the sky while in the tub. The cleaning time for the bathrooms is from 9:30 to 10:30, during which they are unavailable. 4. It's not easy to find convenience stores within walking distance of the ryokan or at the last stop of the cable car. Inside the ryokan, there’s a small souvenir shop and vending machines with coffee, green tea, barley tea, and water. I took a taxi from Goura Station to a nearby convenience store, which had desserts, convenience store food, cup noodles, and drinks, but there was no bottled milk to drink after the bath. If you see bottled milk at the airport, be sure to buy it. 5. Near the last stop of the cable car (Goura), there are soba shops and cafes nearby. We had our second-day lunch at the soba shop. At the cable car station, there is also a ropeway to Owakudani, where we had ramen and egg ice cream. Among the places we wandered around, there was not a single spot where hailing a taxi was easy. Owakudani and the accommodation are marked as outside the service area for the Didi service. If you go by cable car, you need to return by cable car, and if you take the ropeway, you must return by ropeway. Also, taxi drivers here complain that there are no taxis available. 6. When I visited, it was fully booked, so I went down to the first floor to smoke without thinking in the early morning, and I found a staff member sleeping on the lobby sofa. I recommend using the smoking room on the 4th floor during late hours. Lastly, I felt grateful for the kindness of the staff to the point where I became attached to the accommodation I stayed at for three nights and four days. Since I like to relax without wandering around, it was very quiet and nice. Although it was tiring to travel back and forth because the distance from Haneda to the accommodation was far, it was enjoyable. The time may vary depending on circumstances, and if it snows heavily, it becomes difficult to use buses and ropeways.

    “Gorgeous Retreat”

We stayed 2 nights in the Ryokan and it was exceptional. The service was amazing from the room staff and we couldn’t have been happier with the whole experience. The meals served in the room were incredible local dishes and every meal was a treat! The onsen were accessible in house (no clothing allowed) and it was soooo relaxing and added to our whole day/experience. It’s worth coming from Tokyo and spending time in this beautiful area. Transport to the cable car etc was VERY close. Easy accessible to all sightseeing ventures (get the Hakone feeepass prior to leaving Tokyo) Don’t look further - this is a truly lovely experience
