We absolutely loved our one night stay in Shiunso. The room and facilities are exactly as shown in the pictures. The staff was friendly although they speak minimal English. View of the river from our room was really beautiful with the autumn foliage at its peak when we stayed. There are 3 onsen facilities - private indoor (free) and outdoor (paid) which we can used together as a family. The public onsen is unisex but there was nobody there when we visited in the early morning. The kaiseki dinner was excellent, so was the breakfast, both of which were served in our room. Shiunso was conveniently located near the Hakone-Yumoto Station by bus. It is also just a few minutes walk away from the Tonosawa train station. Overall, an excellent ryokan experience. Highly recommended.
I stayed one night at Shiunso for a trip to Hakone near Tokyo. It's quite close, just a 4-minute bus ride from Hakone Yumoto Station and a 10-15 minute walk, with not much uphill and very beautiful scenery for a pleasant walk. (I brought a carry-on suitcase, and it was fine for my husband and me.) Reservations for the private open-air bath and dinner/breakfast kaiseki can be made upon check-in, and we paid an additional fee of 3,300 yen (per group) to enjoy the open-air bath together. Ultimately, it was the best choice, and we really enjoyed a private open-air bath (50 minutes of use). In the morning, we also visited the large communal bath, and we were able to enjoy an incredible scenic open-air bath there as well. The kaiseki meals for dinner and breakfast were all extremely delicious. I didn't look into it in detail, but the place has a deep history. All the staff were friendly, and I felt my privacy was well maintained. However, as is common in Japanese buildings, there was no floor heating, so I found it a bit chilly compared to Korean standards. (Visited in early December) Closing the door and turning on the heater made it alright, and especially the bedding at the accommodation was very warm, so I had no issues sleeping. It was a satisfying stay with nothing lacking, and I would be willing to stay here again the next time I visit Hakone.
Food was good! Location was also good. The train station is behind Ryokan and is about a 7-8 mins walk. Alternatively you can take the bus where the bus stop is just across the street. These 2 transport will take you to all the locations around Hakone.
The kaiseki cuisine was even better in person than what I saw in the photos, and the quality of both the sashimi and meat was excellent and delicious. The staff who brought us the kaiseki was incredibly kind, which surprised me. Thanks to the staff, I had a very comfortable time. When I called the accommodation, it was said to be Japanese only, and the call was cut off, requiring inquiries to be made only via email. However, when I got there, they provided guidance in English, which was a bit surprising. Other than that, the accommodation was much cleaner, more luxurious, and well-maintained than in the photos. Given the price range, the onsen facilities were pristine with no dirt at all. Next to the onsen, there was a stream, and although it is enclosed for the open-air onsen, there was a slight gap, making it very pleasant to enjoy the sound of flowing water while soaking. The private onsen, which cost 3000 yen to use, was also clean and luxurious. I soaked while watching the stars. I stayed for two days, expecting the kaiseki menu to be the same, but it was different on the second day. This was also great. I highly recommend it!

“Absolutely phenomenal”
As a caveat, this hotel does not seem to be used to solo travellers and they were a little shocked that I was staying alone, but they accommodated me well and I loved my stay. The hotel does have a private bath and they still had lots of booking slots available when I arrived, but I ended up declining since the normal shared bath still sounded nice. In fact, I went to the shared bath several times and it was completely empty except during the morning when I went at around sunrise. The views from both outdoor baths are lovely, overlooking the river and the greenery of the mountainside and they rotate which one is the men's and the women's so that they can both be experienced. This is an incredibly quiet hotel in a quiet area and so the hotel provides both dinner and breakfast because there isn't much else around as far as I am aware. However, the food was fantastic and they served a lot more than I could finish. I especially want to highlight how amazing the room was that I stayed in. It could have been a full apartment with an entryway, 2 rooms, and then still another alcove by the balcony with an additional table and chairs. It was excessive for one person, but I had such a relaxing time reading, drinking tea and just enjoying the hotel. Overall, I loved this hotel and the next time i am staying in Tokyo, I will seriously consider taking a day to visit again as it was one of the highlights of my trip.
