“Nice hotel in Hakone with a few quirks”

Hotel Marroad is located near the Gora train station in Hakone (Google maps says 900m walk) , but a steep walk up from the train station - do not plan on walking from the station to the hotel with luggage! However it's only a 6 minute fairly level walk to the Koen-Kami Cable Car station, so during the hours the cable car runs one can avoid the steep slope if desired. The hotel is nice, with a classy feel, and we had a recently renovated room decently sized for Japan. The room still had new materials odor from the renovation, so we had to keep the window cracked open and the heater on. We really liked the toilet room separate from the sink/shower room. Quality of beds, linens, etc. all good, and ample towels & robes were provided. The staff at the hotel were all helpful and provided very good service. The hotel's indoor/outdoor onsen was very nice. However the hotel has a few quirks one should be aware of. Only one pillow was provided on each bed in the twin room we had. We asked the front desk for two more pillows and they were delivered promptly. There was no desk in the room. Only 2 lounging chairs with a small low table in-between. So the only place to use a notebook PC was either on the lap or on the very low table. I peeked into one of their not-yet-renovated rooms (on 1st floor) during cleaning and saw a desk. Hopefully they can add something to the renovated rooms so one can use a notebook computer more easily. The included breakfasts were good quality but limited selection (basically got to choose how your eggs were cooked) and one had to select a seating time the day before, so it was a little bothersome to have to eat breakfast on a pre-planned schedule each day. The restaurant served dinner but only if one makes a reservation the day before. Basically, the restaurant is hyper-focused on not wasting anything, so they need to know exactly how much food to order/prepare ahead-of-time. We witnessed another group struggling at one breakfast because some were vegetarian with no good choices available and a few asked for additional bread/etc. in place of the eggs/sausage and this became a problem as the restaurant did not have any extra to provide (hyper-focused on preparing in advance just exactly what was needed for the number of people being served each day). Both customers and hotel staff became angry during this event. Bottom line: I'd say the restaurant focus is unbalanced - too much focused on zero waste and not enough focus on serving their customers as should be the case for a nice hotel. The free hotel shuttle van to the Gora train station was great (call the hotel when you arrive at Gora and they will come pick you up), but usually only available from 9AM to 4PM. In our case for departure we needed to catch the 8:48AM train out of Gora and luckily their driver was in early that day so we were able to use the service, but it's not guaranteed available outside the 9-4 hours. All-in-all we had an enjoyable stay.

“3 person room on the first floor”

Came here around end of March. Booked a 3 person room on the first floor Twin beds and sofa bed. Prices was right since Agoda had a flash sale. Best way to get there without a car is to take the Train to Hakone train station, then the Tozan train to Gora. At the Gora station, you can go to the visit center next door and ask the lovely ladies there to call for the hotel shuttle. Beware the information center closes around 5 and shuttle service ends at 6pm. Another way is to take the taxi or the bus The staff at the hotel is nice. Front desk understands basic English. Very polite. Our room is for 3 people (two twins and one sofa bed). The room is pretty large and clean. The rooms is always very warm so we had to open the window to let the cold air in. Room is not one of the newly renovated room so it's dated in the 1980s but very clean The hotel is pretty dated in the 1980s. I heard some rooms are being renovated. The bathroom is really huge. One good thing about being on first floor is close to the baths. The hot spring bath has nice indoor and outdoor areas and a sauna. We had breakfast included which is a nice standard breakfast served with eggs, sausage, hash brown, yogurt, bread, coffee, tea, and milk or juice. Not buffet style The place is hard to walk to. The nearest station 2nd or 3rd station of the Tozan Cable car. If you want dinner, you need to reserve a day before. Gora The town closes early (around 5pm) and it's hard to get dinner past 6pm if you don't have reservations. Only a handful of restaurants open at night so you should try and reserve dinner. It's a great hotel if you drive your own car. The shuttle service only goes between hotel and Gora station.

“Great view, good onsen, kind staff, comfortable stay”

Recommend for the good view and onsen and kind staff! Rooms are a bit old, like circa 80s-90s, but clean. Didn't stay in the room much as I enjoyed the outdoor onsen when back at the hotel. My friend and I also enjoyed watching the big TV in the lounge room with the microwave and vending machine. Lounge has massage chairs also. Breakfast was great. Staff were very kind and offered shuttle service to Gora station. If arriving from Gora station after 6pm when shuttle service ends, get a taxi. It's only 600 yen as it's not even 1km and only a 5-minute drive. Don't attempt walking with luggage as others have advised as it's a steep uphill. Also recommend you book breakfast as it's not walkable and there are no restaurants or food places around.

“*Please be sure to mix the bathwater before entering. The mineral content and quality of the water are excellent.*”

◆Room◆ It wasn't a room with a view, but the window had a lovely Western-style atmosphere. In the morning, I could see a beautiful sunrise. The TV had a video-on-demand function, allowing access to YouTube and Hulu if you registered an account. Since I had registered for U-NEXT, I was able to log in and enjoy watching dramas on a large screen, which was really nice. Also, when I flushed the toilet, there was an automatic cleaning function that produced bubbles, which impressed me. I would love to have one at home! It seems that chargers can be lent out, but only if there is stock available at check-in. Many hotels allow you to reserve chargers in advance, but for some reason, I was denied here, which was puzzling. Since I ended up using my own charger while going out, it was good that I brought one, but I thought it would have reduced my luggage if I could have made a reservation in advance. ◆Bath◆ Everything from cleansing to lotion was provided, which was convenient and much appreciated. There were wind chimes hanging in the open-air bath, and even though it was September, it was still a hot time of year, so it felt refreshing, and I was able to enjoy a pleasant bath in tranquility. There was also a sauna. Additionally, there was a gently sloping, wide seating area at the back of the open-air bath, which was great because some rocky areas can be a bit uncomfortable to sit on. It was nice to be able to enjoy the view while bathing. (It was quite stormy weather, though😅) However, during heavy rain, there was a tarp or cloth hanging from the ceiling that collected rainwater, which dripped significantly into the bath. This made the hot spring lukewarm and diluted it, and several other reviews mentioned this as well; I believe this needs improvement. I noticed a sign at the entrance of the indoor bath that said mixing the water with a stirring stick was recommended. When I did, an enormous amount of water flowers rose up from the semi-transparent bath water, quickly turning it milky white...! I think this is a very rich source of flowing hot spring water. (It ranks in my top three experiences!) Since sediment gathers at the corners and bottom, it’s definitely better to mix it before entering. I strongly recommend it. It was so much richer than I expected. The sulfur scent was also pleasant. I was also grateful for the foot reflexology board, which I really like, and the free TV and massage machine in the post-bath area, along with a foot massage machine, was a nice touch. (Many places charge for these.) ◆Breakfast◆ There was a selection of main egg dishes, salads, two types of bread, yogurt, drink options, and additionally, a self-serve station for tea, coffee, soup, etc. At first, I thought a full buffet style would be better, but being able to focus on the meal was also good. I enjoyed my meal while looking at the view in front of me. Furthermore, as others mentioned, the croque-monsieur was delicious. I personally liked the muscat juice among the drink options and had it two days in a row. ◆Shuttle Service◆ There were days with severe weather and stormy rain, so it was very helpful to have shuttle service to Souunzan Station and Gora Station without a car. If I could be picky, I wish they could also provide service to either Koen Kami Station or Koen Shita Station. (In the heat, with heavy luggage, uphill and downhill, and in bad weather, it could be tough even if it’s nearby.) For those who want to leave early in the morning and return a bit late at night, breakfast starts at the earliest at 7:30, and the nearest cable car operates at later times in the morning and ends service fairly early at night, so be cautious. Climbing the steep hill from Gora Station was tough. Overall, though, it was a highly satisfactory stay. The location was somewhat inconvenient, and there were some limitations, but considering the baths, meals, and shuttle services, I felt it was a fulfilling stay. I would like to visit again.
