Our family stayed for two nights in winter, and this time the weather was particularly nice, with no rain or snow and clear, dry skies. The winter in the mountainous regions of Kyoto and Kaohsiung is usually dry, and this experience felt especially refreshing and comfortable! The shuttle bus ride offered bright and clean views of the mountains and forests, with fresh air that made my parents feel relaxed, while the children excitedly took many photos. When we arrived at the inn, the staff warmly welcomed us at the entrance, and their kind greetings made my parents feel well taken care of. Upon entering, we changed into slippers and were served hot green tea. We all sat down to chat and relax, instantly forgetting the stress of city life. We booked two rooms: my wife and I stayed in a larger tatami room with a private outdoor hot spring along with our children (the tatami was comfortable, and the children had a great time playing in the room while the three of us chatted and soaked in the hot spring, which was super chill); my parents stayed in another independent room (also featuring an outdoor bath, offering privacy for them to enjoy at their own pace). Soaking in the hot spring while listening to the sound of the flowing Kiyotaki River, my parents said, “Our joints feel warm, and the whole body is relaxed”; while we and the children enjoyed the mountain view and played in the water from the comfort of our room. The water temperature for soaking in winter was just right, especially with the clear visibility on snow-free days, making it particularly comfortable. The food was stunning! The kaiseki cuisine was beautifully presented and generously portioned, with winter hot pot dishes and nourishing options. We had elders with lighter dietary needs, and they were well adjusted. My parents praised the meal for being “warming without being greasy," and the children were completely satisfied. All meals were enjoyed in the inn, with stunning views of the river or mountains that were incredibly soothing. It was so peaceful here that we could only hear the sounds of nature, making it suitable for family conversations, soaking in the hot springs, and taking walks. The quaint old inn had some natural signs of age, but the lack of rain and snow made it feel fresh and dry, without any impact. The prices were not low, but our whole family felt it was exceptionally worthwhile, leaving us with many warm memories! I highly recommend it to families who want to relax in winter while bringing their parents and children together~ Separate rooms but still able to interact anytime made it truly wonderful; we want to come back next time!
10.0Exceptional
I'm glad that the first stop on my trip to Japan is here. If you have the conditions and time, I recommend spending two days here to truly relax and unwind. As someone who has managed to carve out a few days of vacation from my busy working life, who wouldn't want to rush into the crowds to check in and post on social media? However, Kawano-an really feels like a mental retreat; from the moment you board the shuttle bus, it begins to slow down the fast-paced urban lifestyle. The hotel is nestled in the mountains by the清泷川 in Kyoto, surrounded by fields of Japanese maple and towering cedars, with the sound of flowing water, far away from the hustle and bustle. I checked in at the end of April when the weather was cool, damp, and rainy, but nothing highlights the richness of this green like the rain. I woke up to the sound of streams, raindrops on leaves, and birds chirping, and opening my eyes to see the vibrant green maple leaves in the courtyard felt like a Zen moment. The hotel provides a dedicated shuttle bus service between JR Garden Station and the subway station of Uzumasa Tenjingawa, and the driver is friendly and energetic. I spent some time on the official website investigating the room types and chose the Yamashiro room; if conditions permit, I also recommend the Asagiri room, which has a courtyard with a bath. The hotel also offers a public bath and is a traditional Japanese inn, making it very convenient as well. Dinner featured kaiseki cuisine, and while some dishes weren't quite to my Chinese palate, their pickled vegetables were genuinely delicious—pickled mustard greens, sour cucumbers, and perilla (which I've also enjoyed at other places), all served in abundance. In the evening, the mountains were filled with mayflies. Although "born in the morning and dying in the evening" is very romantic and made me think about the transient nature of life, seeing a dark swarm of insects can still be quite frightening for those who aren’t familiar (which also attests to the good water quality here). If you come during the autumn foliage season, I believe the stunning red landscape will equally captivate your heart.
8.8Excellent
The room layout is very comfortable, with basically private hot springs available, and the public bath allows entry with tattoos. The scenery is excellent; it's in the mountains, so once you're in, you might not want to come out. The meals are quite good, as shown in the pictures. The staff are very friendly and will do their best to communicate in Japanese/English. In summary, this Japanese hot spring hotel has all the necessary elements.
9.6Exceptional
I really wanted a private ryokan that felt like being in a forest, and at first, I was worried that the Asagiri room might be disappointing since there were no photo reviews. However, it was larger than I expected, and literally, when I opened the window, all I could see were trees, which was great. The kaiseki was quite unpredictable in flavors, so it was somewhat unfamiliar, but it was nice as an experience, and I enjoyed the ambiance of eating by the river. Personally, I preferred the breakfast more. One thing to be cautious about is that the ryokan is cooler than expected; maybe it's because it was raining. Of course, once I warmed up in the room's outdoor bath, it wasn't cold at all, but those who are susceptible to the cold should definitely bring thermal wear. Also, make sure to buy snacks at the station because there are no convenience stores. Anyway, I was so happy; I would love to live here. The water is so good too.

Our family stayed for two nights during winter, and the weather was particularly nice this time, with no rain or snow throughout our stay. The sky was clear and dry. The shuttle bus ride was bright and clean with beautiful mountain scenery, and the air was fresh. My parents were relaxed throughout the journey, while the children excitedly took many photos. Upon arrival at the inn, the staff warmly welcomed us at the entrance, and their kind greeting made my parents feel well taken care of. We booked two rooms: my wife and I stayed in a larger Japanese-style room with a private outdoor hot spring, where the tatami mats were comfortable, and our children played happily in the room. We spent quality time chatting and relaxing in the hot spring; my parents stayed in a separate room (also with an outdoor bath for privacy, allowing them to enjoy their time slowly). Soaking in the hot spring and listening to the sound of the clear Takigawa River, my parents said, "Our joints are warm, and our whole body is relaxed"; while the children and I enjoyed the mountain view from our room and played with water. The hot spring water temperature was just right in winter, particularly comfortable, especially since the clear weather provided excellent visibility. The food was amazing! The kaiseki cuisine was intricately presented and plentiful, with winter options like hot pot and health-conscious dishes. We had elderly family members with lighter dietary needs, and they adjusted perfectly, with my parents praising that it was "warming but not greasy," while the children were very satisfied. All meals were served in the inn, providing a therapeutic view of the river or mountains. It was so tranquil here that we could only hear the sounds of nature, making it perfect for family chats, soaking in the hot spring, and taking walks. Though the quaint old inn showed some natural signs of age, it felt especially fresh and dry in the rain-free, snow-free weather, which did not affect our experience at all. The price was not low, but the whole family felt it was absolutely worth it, leaving us with many warm memories! I highly recommend this place for families wanting to relax in winter with their parents and children – separate rooms yet able to interact whenever, it was truly fantastic, and we hope to come back again!
