The ryokan has a great, hospitable staff that has made many guests' stays enjoyable. Guests can avail affordable private onsen with good facilities for a relaxing experience. The place is surrounded by trees and bamboo groves, creating a serene ambiance. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast with shabu-shabu are sumptuous, and many guests rave about them. The ryokan is situated in an excellent location with views of Mount Hakone and a bus stop right in front.

Ryokan has nearby bus stop, but limited access. Minor transport issue not often mentioned in reviews.

“Great Ryokan Experience, but One Disappointing Interaction”

I stayed at this ryokan recently and overall had a very memorable experience. The traditional Japanese room with tatami mats and futon was a unique and comfortable stay. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent—beautifully prepared and served with great attention to detail. The older gentleman in charge of the onsen was especially attentive and friendly, personally showing me to the private onsen, which was great to unwind and relax. Unfortunately, one staff interaction during check-in instructions left me feeling very uncomfortable. While explaining the use of the ryokan facilities to me, one staff member briefly spoke to a coworker between instructions and I distinctly heard the word “baka” (a Japanese term for “fool” or “idiot”) being said under her breath. This was surprising and disappointing, as Japanese hospitality is usually exceptional, and the rest of the staff were wonderful. I immediately picked up on a change in demeanor which soured my stay and was not a bad start to an otherwise great experience. I hope management can address this so future guests can enjoy the same level of professionalism that characterized the rest of my stay in Japan.

    “Highly recommended Japanese-style hotel.”

Before going to the hotel, I thought it would be similar to a family inn, but after arriving, I found out it was a well-trained formal hotel. The entire check-in experience was excellent; communication via email was smooth before my arrival, and after checking in, I discovered the room was large and very clean. We booked two consecutive time slots for the same private hot spring, where I soaked first, followed by my dad and son. The next morning, I went to experience the public hot spring area, which was also very clean and tidy—I felt it was even better than the private hot spring, and the courtyard facing the hot spring was beautiful. Next to the hot spring, there are two family bathrooms, which also have hot spring bathtubs and are free to use as long as the door is open, so having no bathroom in the room was not an issue at all. The public bathroom and family bathroom were more than sufficient and very clean, exceeding most five-star hotel pools or hot spring areas. We ordered breakfast and dinner; the meals were delicious, although the selection might be slightly less than standard Kaiseki cuisine, but it was completely satisfying and flavorful. Location: There is a mountain bus stop right at the entrance, and it is a ten-minute drive to the Tōgen-dai port (the place where the pirate ship docks), with frequent departures. Google Maps timing is accurate, and it might occasionally be a few minutes late. The opposite direction goes to Odawara or Gora, and there is also a bus that goes directly to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. Before our stay, I was always worried about missing the bus, but I found the mountain bus easy to catch. There is also a nearby bus stop (Sengokuhara Elementary School Station) that goes directly to Gotemba and then transfers to Kawaguchiko or San-chu Lake. The service was also very good; the front desk, restaurant, and the elderly gentleman guiding the hot spring were all very friendly. There were two staff members at the front desk who could speak Chinese, one of whom was even from my hometown, which is very close by; we communicated in Sichuan dialect. What a coincidence. In summary, I highly recommend this place. Sengokuhara has fewer tourists, is very quiet, and has a traditional Japanese feel.

    “Excellent Stay”

This was a perfect first stay in a ryokan with an onsen. I was very happy to have secured a room here during my visit to Hakone. The good experience started immediately with taking the bus from Odawara to the ryokan, as there is a bus stop directly outside of the property which was super convenient. Check in time is 3pm, though I came at noon to drop off my bag and head out sightseeing. I was also able to book the private onsen at that time. Upon check-in, the room itself was very roomy compared to many other accommodations I visited during my trip. The futon on the floor of my Japanese style room was also the most comfortable bed I'd slept in the entire trip as well. I enjoyed walking around the property in the yukata and haori. Meals were phenomenal. I tried many dishes that I'd never have tried on my own, nor had the courage to try. All of it was delicious. The highlight of the the place though is the open air onsen. I used the public one several times, and rented the Kaguya private one both nights of my stay. These were some of the highlights of my entire vacation. If you're able to book this location, do not hesitate. If I find myself able to again in the future, I would without a second thought.

“Quiet, Well-Maintained Stay—A Bit Pricey but Fair for Hakone”

Quiet, comfortable base for exploring Hakone. Location is a reasonable ride from most sights—not right next to them, but manageable. The property is very clean and well-maintained, and the staff were genuinely helpful, arranging a breakfast that fit our dietary needs. Pricing felt a bit high in absolute terms, but fair for Hakone. The private bath rooms were the highlight—spacious and truly relaxing.

“I ENJOYED MY STAY TO THE FULLEST!”

I booked a one-night stay in Hakone and chose this resort. The room I stayed in was a Washitsu-style room named Kanmuri. It was incredibly spacious and tidy, complete with a tea set and yukata for guests to enjoy! The bed was comfortable and well-kept, just like the overall design of the room. After reading reviews praising their dinner, I decided to give it a try—and YES! Their Washoku and Choushoku were absolutely amazing, from the flavors to the elegant presentation. Another highlight of my stay was the natural outdoor onsen and the excellent facilities. Even though the water was REALLY HOT, the freezing temperatures (below 0°C) during my visit made it the perfect experience! You can reserve a private onsen, but honestly, the public one was just as great. This hotel is peaceful and well-maintained, with only 12 rooms per floor and a total of three floors (if I’m not mistaken). The staff were all incredibly friendly, helpful, and multilingual. I WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK NEXT TIME!
