“Ok, but very disappointing”
Yes, the location in the Old City is fantastic. The setting and the grounds are peaceful and gorgeous. But the rooms and the service left a lot to be desired, considering the high price point. Upon arrival around 12 pm, we were told that our room was not yet available. We knew that this was not likely true, as it was the low season and the hotel was practically empty. The hotel obviously has a strict policy of not allowing anyone to check in to their room before 2pm. Fine, but just be honest about it. It's a minor detail , but most higher end hotels that we've visited will allow some flexibility (within reason) regarding the check in time. A couple of hours is no skin off their back, and it left a bad taste in our mouth right from the beginning. The room itself had several issues. It showed a lot of wear and was definitely in need of some updates and refurbishment, particularly in the bathroom. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable that we've experienced. The air con unit was making a loud, high pitched noise that was irritating, but we thought we could deal with it. We eventually had to ask to switch rooms because they were unable to repair the air con noise, which kept us up most of the night. Service was polite and friendly, albeit a bit stiff. We were a bit surprised by the lack of the usual small niceties that you'd expect in a hotel of this quality, such as including fruit in the room, or some small chocolates left during the turn-down service. Not a big deal, but it's often the small details that make the biggest impression. The food was probably the most disappointing. Everything was completely bland, something we've never experienced in Thailand1 I had to use the salt and pepper provided continually - something I rarely ever do. Also, my husband had some difficulties in making his food restrictions clearly understood by the staff. Overall, this place either needs to up their game, or significantly lower their prices to be competitive. Chiang Mai has a lot of choices now in the luxury market. We would've been better off paying slightly more money to stay somewhere else nicer. If you absolutely need to be in this location, then stay here and lower your expectations. Otherwise, just save your money and stay somewhere else much cheaper.
