With an awe-inspiring view of Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi, this hotel delights guests with its excellent Japanese cuisine for breakfast and dinner, offering a diverse menu with high-quality food. The hospitable staff provides top-notch service, and the traditional Japanese setting is lovely. The well-maintained, spacious rooms provide a comfortable stay. The highlight is the outdoor onsen with clean and restorative facilities, giving guests an impressive overall experience.

Room slightly cold with dated appliances, but minor issue compared to overall experience.

      “Very good Ryokan experience”

Ryuguden is a very nice place to stay for experiencing traditional Japanese Ryokan in Hakone. The hotel provided free shuttle service round trip Odawara station and the hotel. The driver and all the staffs were very polite and nice. Our room was clean, properly setup and with a very nice view facing Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji. We were able to see Mt. Fuji full view clearly after the typhoon left, very lucky. Although the hotel is not a modern facility but it represents the traditional Japanese style. The Ryokan Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were the top and included many dishes. Our private onsen was clean, quiet and very nice. The surrounding area was very nice and the local bus lines brought us around town. I highly recommend Ryuguden.

      “Our 2nd honeymoon.”

We chose this ryokan because of the location. It’s situated very near Lake Ashi. In addition, we could book our free transport from Odawara Station to the ryokan. Our room was supposed to be able to see Mt Fuji. However during our stay, the weather was cold & cloudy. So we could not see Mt Fuji thru’ out our trip. The room was very comfortable & the futons are very comfortable. We enjoyed the onsens. Both private & the public! The hotel provides free shuttle bus to & fro the town. From the town, you can take full advantage of your Hakone Freepass to go around to see the various tourist attr. Breakfast & Dinner were delicious. We stayed for 2 nights. The hotel ensures that there is no repeat in the breakfasts or dinners. The staff were wonderful. They try their very best to communicate to the guests in English. I would love to come back for another trip just to catch Mt Fuji!

“Great ryokan experience with a few drawbacks”

First off the staff was amazing. Every single person working there did their utmost to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The annex building consists of 3 floors all overlooking ashi lake and the view is spectacular. The tatami mat room is huge with a very traditional feel. Multiple hot spring baths to choose from. Free hot coffee or tea in the lounge and free shuttle service from odawara station and back. Now for the drawbacks. It's really deep in the mountains. About 50 mins with the shuttle ride. Not a deal breaker for me but just putting it out there. The room has very bad air conditioning so can get unbearably hot. It was ok on my visit by opening the window for the cool mountain air in, but this could be a problem in the summer. Lastly, they charged me 500 yen for ice. That's a bit unacceptable imo, as ice is a free commodity in any hotel I've ever been in. For a relaxing ryokan experience to charge for such a thing seems absurd. Overall pleasant experience, I would recommend it but maybe not in the summer.

      “Great View of Mt Fuji”

Pro: Very beautiful view from of My Fuji and Lake Ashi. Room was spacious and onsen was good. We stayed in mid-week and got a private outdoor onsen in the morning as no one was there. Con: Location was remote with not much public transportation. If you are not driving, gotta wait for over an hour for bus to go around. We got dinner and breakfast and food was average. I ran and walked to Heiwa No Torii on the road from Ryokan but there was no pedestrian path and had to shared the tiny road with cars, which was a bit scary.

“Wow! Authentic Japanese hospitality at a legit ryokan -”

So, it can take a few steps to get here…..but it is worth every bit of it. Make sure you come for at least a couple nights/few days. This is a truly legit ryokan with hospitality that will blow you away. Don’t come here expecting classic Western ‘resort-style’ amenities…..come here expecting Japanese hospitality that you don’t even know you needed until you got here. Immerse yourself in a slower pace. If you are lucky enough to get a clear day to see Mt. Fuji from your lakeside room - revel in it, it’s breathtaking and you won’t regret a single moment. Surrender to the incredible service, lean into the onsen culture and take your time to savor every last bite of breakfast and dinner…exquisite! Plan in advance, and make sure you arrange transportation directly with Ryuguden ahead of time (pro tip: don’t fall for the Odawara line Romancecar….yes it’s great, but you end up at the Hakone Yumoto train station and it can be BRUTAL to coordinate getting to Ryuguden). Take the train into Odawara station (another pro tip: you can arrange to have your baggage sent ahead of you, then go see the castle, grab a beer, habpbe a local bite and plan to take the free shuttle from the Ryuguden….but make sure you call them ahead of time to plan your shuttle!). The Hakone region is spectacular, and worth at least a few days of your travel - and Ryuguden is simply outstanding! Hōmon o o tanoshimi kudasai!!
