    “Our best stay in Japan”

Along our trip in Japan, we stayed in 6 accommodations, and this was the best of them. Maybe some others had different services (a restaurant, an outdoor onsen...), but the fact that made this one the best was that it excelled in ALL the the things it offered. It was clean, rooms were big and confortable, the toilets were good, it offered a very nice and big public bath; the staff was polite and very helpful with our requests. It also had a laundry. It was an authentic ryokan and it had a quiet room with a pond that I really enjoyed. Thank you very much for making our honeymoon so pleasand and unforgettable.

“Impressive traditional style in a quiet area”

We have never stayed in a Japanese Ryokan before, but after staying here we will definitely do it again the next time we come to Japan. This Ryokan is located in a very quiet neighborhood, but it is only two blocks to every necessary bus stop to major attractions. We like to go out for most of the day exploring, which means our feet are very tired at the end of the day. The fact that Sawaya Honten has a shared hot bath downstairs was the selling point for us. The bath is shared and open for all guests to use, so just keep that in mind if you are shy of being undressed in front of strangers. The shower and bath area is incredibly clean and fully stocked with body wash, shampoo, conditioner, shower caps and a blow dryer. We used the bath every night and it was so wonderful. The bath is very hot, so we would get out and shower with cold water, then get back into the hot tub. I would stay there all night if I could! We had the private room for 3 people and it was exactly how it looked in the photos. Traditional style floor with the little mattress pads on the floor and a traditional looking blanket. We were given complimentary cookies, tea and coffee sachets for our arrival. That was much appreciated and we definitely drank it all. The room had a mini fridge, tv and the private bathroom with a shower/bath combo. The bathroom is a little bit older but it was very clean also stocked with body wash, shampoo and conditioner. We also ordered the traditional Japanese breakfast and it was absolutely beautiful and just as delicious! 10/10 highly recommend the breakfast. The staff seems a little over worked, but they were very helpful and they do speak some English. My family was very grateful for the extra mattress pads they provided for us. If you’re dreaming of having a traditional Japanese experience, I definitely recommend staying here.

“Beautiful Traditional Japanese yet has the comfort of modern living ”

Stayed for 2 nights and the hosts were lovely. They already took my bags to my room when I returned to check in. ROOM: Traditional yet has the comfort of modern living. Tatami floors and the bath was equipped with good quality toiletries. They also had some afternoon tea for you ready. There was a yukata you can wear and slippers. There was an urn of hot water ready all the time where you can fill in your thermos you can use for tea or coffee. The whole place was clean and quiet. BREAKFAST: Served in the dining room. The lady was ready to serve their meals when i got downstairs. The breakfast was traditional fresh Japanese food which I truly loved. PUBLIC BATH: They have a small public bath that I used once during my stay. It was open early until 11 pm. The area is very quiet and is close to the train station, convenient stores and some cafes nearby and you can walk to Gion if you like with some lovely shrines you go pass along the way. Overall, I would loved to stay here again and would recommend this place if you are wanting to stay in a Japanese type inn without breaking the bank.

    “Great ryokan”

The stay was very pleasant, the rooms were very clean and traditional. There is a mini garden in the center with a pond and fish. It was very peaceful. The staff vas really pleasant and the man at the counter went out of his way to make us feel welcomed by greeting us on our mother tongue and exchange a few words and what he knew about our country. Sento was clean and warm and never crowded. Highly recommend.

“wonderful stay - just be prepared”

we had a wonderful experience at ryokan sawaya hoten. the staff were very helpful and accommodating and assisted us in calling cabs on check out day so we could get all our luggage back to kyoto station and catch our shinkansen in time. the hotel is a bit of a maze, so pay attention when they walk you to your room! we took advantage of the public baths which was a great experience since we weren't able to make it to a public onsen during our trip but wanted to experience once for our first trip to japan. the room was spacious and having a private bathroom was a must for us, so this worked out nicely. however, be aware that the futons are not thick and you may feel like you are sleeping on the floor. this may be a case of we did not do enough research, so it's not the ryokan's fault, but if you are someone who needs a lot of support and are used to western style mattresses and beds, you may not want to stay more than a night or two. we stayed three nights and definitely were feeling it by the end. overall though we had a lovely time and would recommend this place to other travelers!
