Spent one night there but have really mixed feelings. Firstly - it has a great atmosphere and style, there is a big common area combined with their cafe where you can eat quite tasty food (although it's definitely too expensive for Laos standards), easy to meet people, just comfortable and nice. They have spacious lockers, which seems to be a rare thing in hostels here. But sleeping experience and location is no bueno at all... Beds are quite bad for hostels - all are covered with mosquito nets so you have to dive underneath them, no blinds at all to cover the sides. There is no sockets near the bed and not even a small shelf to put even your phone on. Then noise.. I had just one night but I was woken up REPEATEDLY by a rooster crowing again and again nearby starting from like 6 am... Like cmon, for real?.. And yeah, it's quite far from center, around 30 min walk, and there is not much of anything nearby - no big shops, no cafes, so keep in mind. So I'd say I really liked the vibe and atmosphere, but I don't want to actually stay and sleep there heh...
My friends and I stayed at Sa Sa Lao for two nights. The location is quite far from the night market, about 2 km away, but we enjoyed walking to and from there for about 30 minutes, taking in the Luang Prabang surroundings. There aren't many stores nearby for shopping. The sheets were quite clean, and they provided towels and blankets. The bunk beds looked well maintained. We stayed on the second floor of the big house. Since no one was staying on the first floor, we could use two toilet rooms (1st and 2nd floors). However, be careful with the locks on the ground floor, as an ahjumma (middle-aged lady) entered our room at 1am and complained about our noise. We apologized as we didn't realize we were being noisy and that we were in a peaceful place. We didn’t realize everyone in the area could hear us because there are no walls and the house is made from bamboo, so sound waves could travel faster around. This incident prompted us to move to a different hotel. If you're up for experiencing the local, simple living, with quiet and peaceful surroundings, and having mosquito nets on the beds to avoid bites, then this place is for you. After two nights, we moved to a different hotel that was much nearer to the center. To our surprise, the price difference wasn't much. My friends felt we should have stayed at the second hotel instead, but we all agreed that Sa Sa Lao provided a nice, unique experience.
It's a beautiful place to stay, it's very much an eco-lodge by the Nam Khan. The bamboo decor everywhere is cute. The room has fan only, has thin walls so you will hear your neighbors and it lets the nature in - there will be ants, geckos, etc in the room (did not mind this personally). There are mosquito nets over the bed though. I found the bed too high but otherwise comfortable. The hotel is a good 20min walk from the town center and there's no restaurants or anything nearby except their own cafe. The food is ok but it's a very limited menu. But the puppies running around made up for some of the downsides.
Really nice nature vibes but we are not prepared for a very cold night in January. Blankets are not enough to keep you warm since the cold breeze is going into the walls. Bad timing also for us coz of loud prayers even at night coming from a nearby temple. If i remember it right, they said that its annual event during the first full moon until next few days - nonstop.

I love that it sits beside the Nam Khan river, and there was an area where you can lay on a hammock or a rocking chair just staring at the river. The location is a bit distant from the center but that's ok for me since I can take a 15-20 minute walk to and from as form of exercise. I love that it is surrounded by nature and so many trees around. The bed was good and there was a mosquito net, make sure to bring insect repellants as well to protect yourself from insect bites. The bathroom was good and spacious, and it could get quite cold here in December. There was no breakfast provided with the booking, but you can order food or drinks from them. They also arrange tours and you can book your slow boat tickets from them directly. The staff helped me arrange my tickets. Overall it was a relaxing stay.
