    “Fantastic find”

The staff spoke good English and were able to help me with questions and directions. The room was very clean and spacious. Very few other Ryokans offer private in-room onsen's at this price point, while also still being as nice quality overall. Shinanko Ichinoyu strikes the perfect balance between quality/affordability. The private onsen was very large, a perfect temperature, and spotlessly clean. I stayed 2 nights, and the traditional breakfast and dinner were also among the best meals I ate while in Japan. The only downside to this Ryokan is that it's pretty out of the way of the rest of Hakone. It's quite a long bus ride back into town. If you're there in fall though, the nearby Choanji temple (about a 10 minute walk) has some of the best fall scenery of anywhere in Japan, with almost no one else there due to the location. Absolutely don't miss out on visiting during your stay!

    “Lovely getaway”

We booked a little last minute during a busy season so it was more expensive than usual, but we really enjoyed our stay. The private onsen was very relaxing and nice. The room was spacious and comfortable as well. The meals were very delicious. We did not see the public bath so no comment on that. It is about an hour bus ride from the main station, but the view was nice!

    “Wholesome Japanese experience”

Excellent experience in a traditional Ryokan room with a little private onsen and a large public onsen. Very clean, great area a short walk away from the bus stop and restaurants and the amenities were very nice. The in house breakfast and dinner were exceptional and a great experience all round. Highly highly recommended!

    “Two nights at Shinanoki”

We stayed here for two nights - wanted to experience traditional accomodation with private onsen, since we were bit unsure about visiting public one. Everything was great, nice “traditional” experience as we wanted to have :) Talking in English was a bit challenging, but in the end was no problem. We really liked it there!

    “Rainy days are tough.”

I never thought it would rain heavily. The separate room is nice, but it was rainy, so I got wet and cold while moving. I have to go outside for both the bath and meals, so even if I warm up in the bath, I quickly cool down again. The next day was clear, so the morning bath was the best. The meals were delicious, and the staff was kind. The room feels empty. Shouldn't there at least be toothbrushes and yukatas provided?
