“Great hotel but not 5 star!”
Stayed at Barcelo coconut island for 13 nights in a pool villa. Check in was slightly delayed as our villa AC was broken, but we were given a discount on the all inclusive package as we had to wait. The all inclusive is definitely worth it, allowing you food and drinks from the two beach front restaurants. However the new beach bar is not included, most guests avoided using it. Some reviews have said service at the beach bars can be a bit slow, and I do agree, however special mention to Minnie, Mark and Nureeya who were brilliant, great service by them and a real asset to the hotel. We used the hotel for a couple of day excursions to Phi Phi and Hong island - great trips, well worth the money. The hotel guide Ron was brilliant. Are in the Japanese restaurant, beautiful setting and views, great food and 30% discount for all inclusive guests. We’d read many previous reviews about the beach area so aware that when the tide goes out fully it is not pretty, however when the tide is in you don’t notice. If you do want swim in the sea then catch the free trip every day to Koh Rang Yai where the beach has fine white sand and clear waters. It leaves every day from the front jetty 11-2pm, well worth visiting. So why didn’t we give 5 stars? The one and only reason was the awful housekeeping. Some days our villa wasn’t cleaned, and towels weren’t changed. The minibar should be filled everyday but was only done once or twice in our stay, and only after we had called reception. On three occasions we had to call reception to get towels, and paying extra money for the pool villa is just not worth it. Our bed was only changed once for the two weeks. Our pool was only cleaned once in the two weeks, and not the patio or furniture which remained covered in leaves and dust. We did talk to reception most days having to ask for the basics, not once was there an apology for any of this which should be a given when you stay in a 5 star hotel! I hope that Barcelo will continue to raise the standards in this hotel, it really should start with replacing the housekeeping team!
